Using Color-Blocking In Your Wardrobe

Welcome back to another What I Wore post. Each week, I share real fashion tips and outfit ideas for real women. I'm a mom in my 40s, but the last thing you'll see me wearing is a mini skirt or mom jeans. This week, let's talk about color. Wearing high-contrasting shades can be a style challenge for some (like me). But it doesn't have to be difficult. With some basic knowledge, you can pair color blocks in a stylish way.

One of the best tips for wearing color is to keep the style simple. Clean lines and classic shapes keep your outfit in style, without looking like you pulled random things from your closet. While I tend to stick to neutrals, with one color at a time, this past week, I really brightened up with chambray and yellow, with coral accents.

Pairing Chambray and Yellow Pieces with Coral Accessories for a Stylish Color Block Outfit
Top - Ann Taylor (current season)
Pants - Talbots (this year)
Bag - Kate Spade
Shoes - Vionic
Bracelets - Alex and Ani and Tiffany
Necklace - Tiffany
Earrings - Kate Spade

I also changed the shoes, making the outfit a little dressier with wedges.

Wedges - Target (last year)

Something to keep in mind when wearing bright colors, keep accessories simple. They can be bright as well, but they shouldn't be fussy or overpowering. Also remember to emphasize your "best" areas and features. If you're more of a pear-shape, for instance, you may not want your brightest color to be around your hips. Don't be scared - experiment a little, have fun with it, and come up with new outfits from pieces you already own!

What are you wearing this week? Are you a fan of bright colors? How do you like to wear them?
