How-To Make an Egg Carton Caterpillar

Easy DIY Kids Craft Egg Carton Caterpillar

I love using things we have around the house to inspire some crafting with my kids. Not only do you get to keep thing green by reusing, but many times, these crafts and DIY projects are also pretty easy. We like easy! I had a lot of egg cartons on-hand, so we decided to make bugs. Caterpillars are pretty cute and colorful, especially when you let your kids make them.

This is one craft we did that turned out really well and we both loved it: An Easy DIY Egg Carton Caterpillar (I may have seen this on Nick Jr. or somewhere else, which inspired me). Perfect for little hands (and not so little hands).

Supplies:
Cardboard Egg Carton
Acrylic Paints (poster paints work too)
2 pipe cleaners - long
1 set of google eyes
Scissors
Hole Punch
Craft glue or Glue Dots

Instructions:
Cut out the 12 egg cups from the carton. You can make 2 caterpillars with 6 cups on each one.  You don't have to be perfect - just cut them out.

Paint the egg cups however your heart (or your child's heart) desires.  The more colorful the better.

Allow the cups to dry.

Pick a cup for the head, and punch a hole in one side of the cup.  You are going to use these holes to "string" the cups onto the pipe cleaner.  Loop or tie-off the pipe cleaner under the head cup so it won't slide off.

Punch holes (2 in each cup) for 4 of the cups - on opposite sides.  String the cups onto the pipe cleaner.  I left a little space for them to slide - but not much.

For the last cup, only punch  1 hole - like the head and tie it off underneath.  That's the end/tail.

Now use a glue dot or craft glue to attach the Google eyes on the head.

I used a smaller black pip cleaner as antennae - I poked 2 small holes in the top of the head, bend the pipe cleaner in the middle and poked the 2 ends through the holes.  I snipped a bit off the tops of the antennae and folded it down to get rid of the sharp edge.
