Holiday Party Style | What I Wore

This week's post for What I Wore is all about Holiday Party Style. Nothing (except perhaps a wedding) can cause as much fashion angst, as a holiday party. I blame all those TV movies and magazine spreads of glamorous fancy parties, for our stress. But there's no need to stress, you've got the perfect thing to wear!

Years ago, John's office used to put on one of those very glamorous and fancy holiday parties (remember when the economy was great?) and I would start thinking about what to wear in August. Scour Nordstrom and Ann Taylor for just the right LBD. A LBD because it was versatile and I could style it differently a month later when we went to the Black Tie Tailgate . . .then we had kids. Sometimes the dress was long, sometimes short. . .but almost always black.

Little Black Dress Style Ideas

These days, my holiday parties are much more casual, so a great pair of dark denims or black ankle pants with a great top or sweater fits the bill. Last week I attended a Holiday Party just down the street and it was raining. After a quick perusal of Pinterest for inspiration, I started shopping my closet. I had already decided I was going to go "rustic chic" and wear my Hunter Wellies with a skirt. Here's what I pulled together:

Casual Holiday Party Outfit Idea
Skirt - Eddie Bauer (old)
Sweater - Lord and Taylor Cashmere (last year - similar styles available NOW)
Tights - SPANX Tight End Footless Tights (my favorite!!)
Socks - Hue
Boots - Hunter Wellies (classic)
Necklace - Tiffany

I added a chunky dark grey sweater too. Before deciding on the black sweater, I had on a white button-down shirt and a merlot cardigan. That looked a little dressier, but still great with the plaid skirt and wellies.

Some other great Holiday Party ideas:
  • For black tie, consider a Ball Skirt and Wrap Blouse or sparkly top.
  • For something more casual, or cocktail attire, try a black skirt and jewel-toned jacket or twin set.
Chances are good you already have at least part of the perfect outfit in your closet already.

What are you wearing to Holiday Parties this year?

  1. Gosh, holiday parties are so much fun but I always struggle with what to wear because I always worry if I am too dressed up or not dressed up enough! Oh the woes of holiday attire!
