What I Wear to Work

Welcome back to another weekly fashion post! First time here? This is the place where I share what I actually wear, along with ideas and inspiration for styling the pieces you already own into a casual, everyday wardrobe. Today, let's talk about what we wear to work.

In today's world, there are many choices for what's "work appropriate" depending on your field.

YEARS ago . . .way back in the early 90s . . .women were encouraged and expected to wear a blue suit on a job interview. Don't even get me started on the blouse with a bow trend! I remember going to a college job fair, wearing a snazzy periwinkle blue dress, hair in a bun and chunky silver jewelry. My college advisor nearly had a heart attack when she saw me - "you wore THAT??!" But I did, and I got the job besides.

These days, I work in my dining room on most days. Unless I have a client meeting (in person) or am attending an event, I can pretty much sport yoga pants and a T-shirt. I don't usually though, because I like clothes. I like getting dressed (most days). But since I can. sometimes I dress like this:

Work at Home Casual Outfit - Yoga Pants and T-Shirt
Yoga Pants - Target (my favorite for everyday ones!)
T-shirt - LAX Tournament
Sneakers - Sketchers
Bracelets - Tiffany and Alex and Ani

Depending on your field and work environment, you may not have many choices. Many law firms, finance offices and other conservative fields, maintain stricter and more conservative dress codes. Even their "casual days" can mean no jeans or bare legs, not to mention no open toe shoes or short skirts. But with the rise in startups and remote working arrangements, many days work attire can be downright casual.

Some ideas to get you started: think about a nice pair of pants and twin set, pair them with a great tote and ballet flats and you're trendy and inline with work preferences.  Pencil skirts are a great choice for many body types, and tend to be a better length for the workplace. If your workplace is on the casual side, you may be able to wear a wrap dress, or a sundress with a jacket or sweater to cover your shoulders.

What do you wear to work? Do you have a "work uniform"?

  1. Love that pencil skirt! I will need to get some "work" clothes out soon. YIKES! Let's see if any of them fit.
