Wearing Vintage Fur

Fabulous Fur Pieces to Add to Your Wardrobe

This week, let's talk about wearing fur. I'm not talking about real vs. faux fur, or whether wearing fur is "right" or "wrong," I'm talking about how to rock a vintage piece of fur clothing in your everyday wardrobe. There is no doubt that fur can be warm. With these chilling temperatures, I've noticed a lot more fur trim on sweaters, jackets and hats, and that got my fashion thoughts churning.

I am lucky enough to have inherited a few fur collars and a couple fur hats from my grandmother. I dug them out the other day, with the plan to see if I could incorporate them into my wardrobe. Vintage is all the rage - right? For this week's post, I started with an easy one. It's a vintage faux-jaguar fur collar. It attaches easily with pins.

I decided to keep it low-key and classic, with a simple black cashmere v-neck sweater and skinny jeans. I loved the funky casual look and felt very chic. The collar definitely added interest to a plain black sweater. I chose not to wear a necklace with the collar . . .less is more sometimes. I think I would have liked this look with some gold jewelry . . .like a vintage chunky gold charm bracelet and small link choker.

Here's how it came together:

Basic Black Sweater Styled with a Vintage Fur Collar
Jeans - Ann Taylor Modern Skinny Jeans
Sweater - Eddie Bauer Cashmere (old)
Collar - Vintage Fur from Grandmom's Collection
Boots - Aerosoles (old - they have been re-heeled once)
Bracelets - Alex and Ani and Tiffany
Earrings - Kate Spade

I have a more luxurious one to try next, but I'm not sure what to style it

  2. A little bit of animal print can go a long way! :) My mom always wore her minks for special occasions, and one year she had a coat that was slightly damaged made into a bomber jacket. A mink bomber jacket! It was so amazing (I was probably in middle school or younger at the time). And I have a client who has her signature fur head wrap. It's stunning and totally her.
