12 Days of Christmas | Favorite Local Nonprofit

12_days_of_christmas2

I support and volunteer with several local nonprofits in our area.  I feel it's important to give back your most precious commodity - your time.  I'm also trying to teach my boys how important these organizations are to our community.

I have been a part of The Breastfeeding Resource Center since it's launch in 2003.  When I had Ryan in 2000, I became very active in the local chapter of the Nursing Mother's Advisory Council.  In fact, I sat through their course to become a phone counselor for other nursing moms in our area.  I loved it.  I loved being able to help these moms who were tired, nervous stressed out & getting a stream of information from various sources.

I would call a few days after they got home from the hospital, ask how things were going and leave my contact information.  I would follow-up in a day or too. . .because if you breastfed your children, you know how quickly things changed.  I was so fortunate to be able to help and support women in my community.  And now there is an entire center dedicated to breastfeeding support.

The Breastfeeding Resource Center offers the following types of services:
  • Professional Services by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants
  • Retail Sales
  • Free Support Group Meetings
  • Parent Classes
  • Education for Healthcare Professionals
The center is doing amazing work in our community, and I am lucky enough to serve as the Chair of the Communications Committee.

If you are a nursing mom in the Abington, PA area, get in touch and get involved - the support group and resources can make your breastfeeding much more enjoyable.

If you are looking for a local non-profit to support, or if you are a breastfeeding advocate - I'd be thrilled if you supported the efforts of the Breastfeeding Resource Center.

Our time and our money are very precious to us - these days, people, myself included, are much more choosy where they donate.  I'd love if you'd leave me comment with your favorite local nonprofit.

  1. When I had my first child over 15 years ago, I didn't know anyone that breastfed. I did it for 6 weeks, and then basically gave up because I had no support.

When I had my next 4, starting 8 years ago, I tried breastfeeding again, and loved it. Having a sil who was also breastfeeding plus access to support online helped immensely!

  2. I found out about the BRC through a colleague at work who is very passionate about the organization. I know what it's like needing an ear at 11pm because your child won't latch or just need to talk to someone who can relate. A very worthy non-profit in our area that is an excellent resource for Moms.
